The Copper Foil on PCB (Part 2)

The Matte Copper Foil and The Shiny Copper Foil

Now lets learn about the difference between the matte copper foil and the shiny copper foil:

The cover image displays the appearance of copper foil and its corresponding scanning electron microscope (SEM) images: the left side shows the matte copper foil, while the right side shows the shiny copper foil.

In the context of PCB manufacturing, the matte copper foil, also known as rough copper foil, has a textured surface that can enhance adhesion with the substrate, which is beneficial for the lamination process and can improve the mechanical strength of the PCB. On the other hand, shiny copper foil, or smooth copper foil, has a polished surface that can offer better electrical conductivity and is often used in applications where high signal integrity is required due to its reduced surface roughness, which minimizes the skin effect and proximity effect in high-frequency circuits.
