Today, I will tell you what is the meaning of TG, and what are the advantages of using high TG PCB.
High Tg refers to high heat resistance. PCB boards with high Tg transition from a "glassy state" to a "rubbery state" when the temperature rises to a certain threshold. This temperature is known as the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the board. Essentially, Tg is the highest temperature (℃) at which the base material maintains rigidity. This is equivalent to the phenomenon where ordinary PCB substrate materials, under high temperatures, continuously undergo softening, deformation, melting, etc., and also manifest as a sharp decline in mechanical and electrical properties, which in turn affects the service life of the product. Typically, Tg boards are above 130℃, high Tg is usually greater than 170℃, and medium Tg is about greater than 150℃. PCB boards with Tg≥170℃ are commonly referred to as high Tg PCBs; the higher the Tg of the substrate, the better the heat resistance, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and stability characteristics of the circuit board, which are improved. The higher the TG value, the better the board's temperature resistance performance, especially in lead-free processes where high Tg is more commonly used.
With the rapid development of the electronics industry, especially electronic products represented by computers, which are moving towards high functionality and multi-layering, there is a need for higher heat resistance in PCB substrate materials. The emergence and development of high-density mounting technologies such as SMT and CMT make the miniaturization, fine-line processing, and thinning of PCB boards increasingly reliant on the high heat resistance of the substrate.
Therefore, the difference between common FR-4 and high Tg: Under high temperatures, especially after moisture absorption and heating, there are certain differences in the mechanical strength, dimensional stability, adhesion, water absorption, thermal decomposition, and thermal expansion of the materials. High Tg products are significantly better than ordinary PCB substrate materials.
