What is Conformal Coating in PCB Manufacture (Part 8)

2024-11-07

Conformal Coating Process

This time we will talk about the other precautions of covering conformal coating on PCB. These precautions are mainly formulated the workers to take care of the covering conformal process, to making better PCB products with covering conformal.

Here the precautions are:

1. Personal Protection:

Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as masks, gloves, and goggles, to prevent harm from the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in conformal coatings.

2. Post-Spray Cleaning:

After spraying, invert the conformal coating can and press the spray button until only gas comes out to clean the spray nozzle and prevent the coating from curing and blocking the nozzle.

3. Coating Thickness:

To achieve a thicker coating, it is recommended to apply two thinner coats, waiting for the first coat to dry completely before applying the second to ensure uniformity and adhesion.

4. No Coating Areas:

When applying conformal coating to PCBs, certain areas such as connectors, software sockets, switches, heat sinks, etc., must not have coating material. It is recommended to use removable solder mask to cover these areas to prevent the conformal coating from affecting their functionality.

We will learn another 4 precautions in the next part.
