In the PCB design process, starting from the schematic is a crucial step that determines the basic functionality and performance of the circuit. In terms of component selection, Surface-Mounted Devices (SMD) are the preferred choice because of their smaller size and shorter interconnections, which contribute to more stable high-speed performance. The compact layout of SMD components reduces the length of signal transmission paths, thereby reducing signal delay and improving signal integrity, which is particularly important for high-speed circuit design.

Achieving the best high-speed performance is possible when the width of components is close to the width of the traces. This is because when the dimensions of the traces and component pads are matched, impedance can be better controlled, reducing impedance discontinuities and thus reducing signal reflections and improving signal quality. Impedance matching is a key factor in high-speed PCB design, ensuring that the signal encounters minimal impedance variations during transmission, thereby reducing signal distortion and enhancing circuit performance.
